Cabarrus Meals on Wheels Celebrates 50th Anniversary

50th Anniversary ribbon cutting

Cabarrus Meals on Wheels (CMOW) proudly marks its 50th anniversary this year, celebrating half a century of dedicated service to the community. Since its inception in 1974, CMOW has delivered over 2.5 million meals to more than 13,000 clients, thanks to the tireless efforts of over 12,500 volunteers.

To commemorate this milestone, CMOW has been hosting a series of events this year to commemorate the milestone, including a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that took place in March, a Volunteer Appreciation event, and the Hunger Hustle 5K, both in April.

The celebrations will culminate in October, with the highlight of the anniversary, a 1974 Groovy Gala on October 19, 2024. Inspired by the year the organization was founded, the groovy bash is replacing the annual Soup Sampling and promises to be a night full of fun and nostalgia.

From its humble beginnings serving eight clients, CMOW has grown to operate 30 routes, ensuring that no day goes by without delivering meals, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. This growth reflects the community’s support and the organization’s commitment to adapting and expanding its services.

“Our 50th anniversary is a testament to the incredible support from our volunteers, staff, and community partners,” said Kimberly Strong, Executive Director of CMOW. “As we celebrate this milestone, we renew our commitment to serving our community with compassion, empathy, and determination. Together, we will continue to work to build a future where no one is forgotten.”

In conjunction with the anniversary, CMOW has launched a new logo, symbolizing its commitment to delivering more than just meals. The organization invites the community to join in the celebrations and support its mission by volunteering or donating.

CMOW has a continuing need for volunteers to deliver meals as the number of clients they serve continues to grow. The summer months in particular are challenging as their regular volunteers take vacations. Delivering meals is a great opportunity for churches, companies, students looking for service hours, and anyone looking to make a difference in the life of Cabarrus County seniors.
